In case you didn't get the memo, Bonnaroo's not just a jam-band jubilee anymore. Sure, Saturday night's festivities included a four-hour set from Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh and Friends, where some old-school Dead james were kicked out, but there was a lot more to the evening's story. Kanye West, probably one of the few artists with enough moxie to follow a Dead-related act at Bonnaroo, had his work cut out for him when hit the stage at 4:30 a.m. with the mission of winning over an angrily chanting crowd who'd spent the last hour-and-a-half waiting for him (his people subsequently blamed stage-setup delays).
Earlier on Saturday, octogenarian blues boss B.B. King did his thing and was given the key to the city of Manchester, TN. Levon Helm of the Band turned out a set filled with Band classics, Cat Power turned up with covers of Fleetwood Mac ("Dreams") and Creedence Clearwater Revival ("Fortunate Son"), and Pearl Jam got into the covers act too, studding their set with everything from Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" to the Who's "Love, Reign O'er Me." If that wasn't enough, everyone from Chromeo to Talib Kweli to Sigur Ros was on hand as well, definitively proving that you don't need a Master's Degree in hackysack to get your groove on at Bonnaroo.
