Growing up in the suburbs of Vernon, Connecticut I often found myself one of the few kids who listened to this "indie rock" stuff. A band that I found in high school probably by reading Magnet was the indie pop group Velocity Girl or perhaps I checked them out because they were on Sub Pop. In any case, I was in shock when my first week of classes at Boston University I met this cute girl Alyssa in my Spanish class who also was a big fan of Velocity Girl. She actually was a bigger fan of the band than I was, she had all of the band's albums while I only owned Simpatico. In any case, we went to see Velocity Girl perform and if there ever was a good indie rock band to take a date to it was Velocity Girl due to their combination of lyrics about relationships along with the back and forth vocals between Sarah Shannon and Archie Moore. Unfortunately, I was horrible with girls and Alyssa and I would be acquaintances throughout college. I don't remember how that came about, but perhaps I paid to much attention to Sarah Shannon's great vocals and yes, she was quite the babe. For you youngsters out there, there were other women in indie rock that nerdy music fans drooled over before Jenny Lewis came along.
Now fast foward to 2006 and we have news of a new album City Morning Song by Sarah Shannon. The underrated Minty Fresh label will be putting it out in February 2007. You can stream new tracks at Sarah's Myspace page.
