Did you call Santogold R&B? Then you are a racist, my friend.

Just when you thought that maximum Santogold awareness had been achieved (two Bud Light commercials, and a song with Pharell and Julian Casablancas) she unleashed a diatribe to the folks over at Lipster.

Speaking on how her single “Lights Out” has been classified as “HipHop/R&B” as the iTunes free single of the week (in England) Santi had this to say:

 "It's racist. It's totally racist.

Everyone is just so shocked that I don't like R&B. Why does R&B keep coming into my interviews? It's pissing me off. I didn't grow up as a big fan of R&B and, like, what is the big shocker? It's stupid.

Granted, nothing on the album definitively skews R&B, but it would be pretty hard to classify the album as New Wave/Reggae/Dancehall/Dub.

All this hubbub must be confined to the U.K., because stateside her album is labeled as Alternative on iTunes and Amazon.

Ease up Santi. You should take it as a compliment that you album is hard for people to classify, not make allegations of racism over their inability to do so.[The Lipster]

Her album is definitely more of a rock album, but I think a lot of people label her as a hip-hop/rnb artist because she's closely linked to artists such as Diplo and Spank Rock.

M.I.A. + Gwen Stefani + Karen O = Santogold

Whatever the hell kind of genre that is.

People could always be a bit honest and just tell her that minus a few tracks it is a pretty mediocre album...

I see her point. Some people just see a Black woman and automatically think R&B. People can be superficial morons like that. I remember this one dumb chick I knew who swore Lenny Kravitz was "reggae" because all she saw was a Black man with dreads. The guy couldn't be more rock 'n roll if he crapped Fender Stratocasters. In a way, it's a commentary on how society is more focused on the image of an artist than their actual output.

And her debut album is very good, imho.

I understand her frustration and it's rightly justified but at the same time I think it's rather a oxymoron to diss RnB and say you don't like it when you say your influences are James Brown and Aretha Franklin both are the epitome of RnB music. RocknRoll and your form of music wouldn't even exist without RnB

HAH! Ease up? This writer hasn't been in her shoes enough to understand her frustration. I totally agree with Nick on this. People tend to assume you're a certain musical category just because you're of particular skin colour or its the attire. People need to widen their perspective up a bit and stop being so stereotypical.

And Layla - How is it an oxymoron? She didn't diss R&B, she clearly said she's not a huge fan....she didn't the genre sucks.
James Brown / Aretha Franklin are more Blues/Soul and yes R&B derives from that genre, but its still two different styles!
