When Justin Vernon released his second album under the title of Bon Iver, he said that it was self titled because Bon Iver was no longer just one person, but an entire band. Listening to Bon Iver, it does not take long to realize that this is true. Where his first album, For Emma, Forever Ago was made up primarily of a voice and guitar, Bon Iver was filled with complex musical arrangements thanks to the help of many friends and artists.
One of those musicians is Sean Carey, aka S. Carey, and along with being the percussionist in Bon Iver, he has a solo career as well, and is gearing up for the release of his second full length album, Range of Light.
Describing his music, Carey said: “my music has specific connections to nature and place, my surroundings, and my experiences.” These themes are ones that are going to be found throughout the upcoming album. “The term, ‘Range of Light,’ to me, denotes the spectrum of light and dark a person can have in their life–peaks and valleys of happiness, sorrow, challenges and growth…”
Range of Light is due out on April 1, through Jagjaguwar and is to feature contributions from Justin Vernon. Listen below to the first offering from the record, “Fire-scene.”
