Russell Simmons calls Obama's victory a "reflection of hip-hop politics"

The hip-hop community came out in force ahead of Barack Obama’s presidential victory on Tuesday. Now Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons has been writing about his feelings on the event for the Huffington Post. Simmons feels Obama’s victory was a vindication of sorts for the hip-hop community, saying: “The vision of the hip-hop generation and its young people was in full and glorious effect last night.”

Simmons calls Obama’s victory a “clear reflection of hip-hop politics,” before spouting some new age-y spiel aout his election being “a beautiful testament to the American collective consciousness that is flowering.” But USA Today called Simmons one of the most influential people of the past 20 years in 2007, and his words are sure to resonate with a sizable section of voters.

He concludes by saying, presmably in reference to John McCain and Sarah Palin’s defeat: “I feel like America has dodged a bullet. Let's support this beautiful leader to do the work necessary to promote and execute on the change agenda we all voted for.” Simmons’ “The Vision of the Hip-Hop Generation” can be read in full here.
