Rolling Stone magazine getting smaller, its endless coverage of all things Jonas Brothers will not

A story in the New York Times yesterday announced that venerable rock mag Rolling Stone will be switching to a smaller size in October. This marks the first time the magazine has changed its size since it went from a newspaper to the large-paged magazine of today.

The first smaller issue will be available until October 17 (the October 30 issue), and the pages will be glossier than before to make up for the decrease in size. The main reason for the switch seems to be that Rolling Stone’s single copy sales have dipped by more than 50,000 copies in the last eight years (down to 132,000 last year, as opposed to 189,000 in 1999). The smaller size will allow the magazine to be prominently displayed at cash registers.

Wenner seemed slightly ambivalent about the switch.

“All you’re getting from that large size is nostalgia,” he told the Times.

The problem with RS is not the size of the magazine, it's their politics. I've never seen such left-wing, biased garbage in my life. People want to read the magazine for their music coverage, not to see how much they can constantly bash Bush and the Republicans. It's disgusting.

i'd rather read RS for it's political coverage than its music coverage any day.

Can't believe their circulation is down to 132,000. Tough times for most music print magazines.

I also enjoy Rolling Stone's essential political coverage far more than its music coverage, which only concerns itself with Top 40 and pointless lists. Their politics is the only thing relevant about them.

Bah, their political coverage is a far cry from the days of Hunter S. Thompson trailing McGovern.

True, but nothing can really compare to HST's political coverage. RIP

I actually await Rolling Stone every week just to read Matt Taibbi's columns. He packs so many ridiculous metaphors into one sentence. I remember he once called a representative a Jabba the Hut-like pig fu**er.

Without question, the best thing about RS is the political coverage. Once in a while there's an interesting musical feature, but the Hills and the JoBros for cover subjects tells you where their priorities are at.
