Rock Band Offers Strangely Funkless Funk Update
The Rock Band franchise is keeping the varied tastes of its audience in mind, and stepping away from a steady diet of rock to offer a package of tunes in the funk category. While it's nice to see something other than the standard guitar shredders and heavy metal fist pumping on a music sim, the choices in first pack fall a little short of funk. Earth Wind and Fire's "Shining Star" and Average White Band's "Pick Up the Pieces" are on the disco side of the equation, which is fun but not necessarily funky. The third track, James Brown's "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine) Part 1" has more credibility than either of the first two tracks, but would probably more comfortable in a soul collection. Doubtless the new songs will be a nice break from the previous rock inundation, but it's hard to accept a funk package without George or Bootsy. [The Daily Swarm]
