Gerard Smith, of TV on the Radio, died this morning following complications associated with lung cancer, according to the band's website. He was 34.
"We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer," the band wrote on its site. "Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly."
It was revealed last month that Smith, who played bass in the band, had been diagnosed with lung cancer upon completion of their latest album, Nine Type of Light. He was undergoing treatment and, thus, was not able to join the band on its tour. Drummer Jaleel Bunton was filling in for Smith while the band had added a new drummer.
