Suffering an apparent heart attack, Gerald Levert died today at age 40.

For those unaware, Levert has been a seminal figure in the R&B world both as a solo artist, as a member of the groups LeVert and LSG, and as a producer for the likes of Barry White and Teddy Pendergrass. Levert came from a strong musical tradition, as his father Eddie was a key member of The O'Jays. Levert was never the superstar that someone like Bobby Brown was in his prime, but his vocal abilities and consistency always kept him relevant.

My favorite Levert project is the eponymous album spawned from the supergroup LSG, which included fellow stars Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill, and was well received both critically and commercially. Its smooth, to say the least.

So while Levert didn't sell 100 million albums (though he sold quite a few), or cure cancer, we should take a moment and honor the man and his music.
