R.I.P. Ean Evans, Longtime Bassist for Lynyrd Skynyrd

Ean Evans, longtime bassist for Southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd, passed away after a long battle with cancer. The band, famously decimated by a tragic plane crash in 1977, toured in various forms over the years. Evans’ passing marks the second death in Skynyrd’s current incarnation during the calendar year, as keyboardist Billy Powell passed away from an apparent heart attack in January. The deaths of Powell and Evans, coupled with those of Jerry Reed and Dom Deluise, have a taken a severe toll on the “good old boy” music and movies that dominated a large segment of pop culture in the late Seventies. Though not many people will admit to being fans of Smokey and the Bandit or owning a copy of Street Survivors, these men were much more than “rednecks,” and provided the template for bands such as the Drive By Truckers, Hank III, and the Old 97s.
