Lux Interior, real name Eric Purkhiser, frontman for legendary punk band the Cramps, died yesterday due to a heart condition in Glendale, Calif.
Interior founded The Cramps with his wife, Kristy "Poison Ivy" Wallace in New York in 1976 at the time of the punk explosion. The band took a left turn however, incorporating elements of rockabilly and horror movie mythology into their music and stage act, eventually coining the term "psychobilly."
The Cramps were active as a band until recently, making them one of the few bands from the punk era to make it to the 21st Century. [Pitchfork]
Psychobilly never got out of its novelty-act reputation, even though The Cramps were the most artistically adept cover of "Surfin Bird." With any luck, the silver lining of this death will be that the Cramps and their followers get the respect they've deserved.
Truly a bummer... but in reading all the reports about Lux's death I find it amazing nobody refers to Jon Spencer... maybe he's just so forgotten about these days... but I think Jon Spencer stole his entire show from Lux.. and maybe a bit of Jagger.

This was a geniune bummer. When I was 14 and I first heard of the Cramps, I'd listen to their (by then) old records and they would freak me the f*ck out. I'd never heard anything that sounded so weird to me at the time. They were a great and absurd live show and I was genuniely saddened to hear this news.
This is truly, truly a sad day. Nobody kept the primal yelp wail of rock and roll alive like Lux. He was the one.

Sir,
I feel your assessment on one Jon Spencer is a bit misguided. Mr. Spencer did not rip off only Lux or Jagger but also Elvis, the blues, rock n roll, and all decency. And that was sort of the point. But for all the talk of Spencer ripping off black bluesman, I appreciate your willingness to admit that ripping off white people can occur too.

Jeez man, Ive been listening to the Cramps since I was very young, Ive seen them live again and again. Rest in peace Lux, and dammit, somehow, now I have a chance to screw Poison Ivy, which would be totally rad. Shes the hottest rock chick in the world.
