NCSU vs. RIAA (Round 1)

Via: Ars Technica
As most know by now, the RIAA has a reputation for trying to strongarm illegal downloaders out of more cash than they do the artists. This time it seems that North Carolina State University isn't going to give into the music industry division of The Man, Inc.
23 Subpoenas were sent to NCSU in an attempt to uncover illegal downloaders and while the university forwarded those subpoenas to the responsible parties, they have advised the students not to reveal their identities until they have to. Ars Technica writes that "The director of student legal services at NCSU, Pam Gerace, told the student paper: 'The RIAA actually said they might have use for the names in the future,' and therefore has been telling students not to give away their identities just yet."
While I respect the subversive tactics of a state institution, i have to wonder; when The State stands up to The Man, is that kind of like a snake eating itself?

My school, UW-Madison, is doing the same thing. They refuse to give out names form the IP adds. I don't live on campus, and I have peer guardian installed, but it's still cool. BTW, in case you don't know, the tactics used by the RIAA - offering $1,000 instead of a *possible* lawsuit - could be considered extortion. If you have a good lawyer, they'll realize that.Fuck the RIAA.
