RIAA drops case against file sharer

A long-running case between the RIAA and a user of the KaZaA P2P network has finally come to an end. The user, Joan Cassin, received notice of the lawsuit in April 2006 after sharing 406 songs on KaZaA. The RIAA has decided to drop the case, possibly because of a motion filed by Cassin’s attorney that would have led to a courtroom battle.

The suit against Cassin would have been one of the first P2P cases to be contested in court, and this article speculates that the RIAA may have walked away because of “significant doubt that it would prevail.” The article also points out several significant cases in which the RIAA has lost out in the battle against online piracy. Anyone downloading a leaked copy of the Coldplay album can rest a little easier tonight.
