Reznor Explains Why He Really, Truly Is For Sure Quitting Twitter This Time

A social networking site like Twitter seems like a harmless way for musicians to keep in touch with their fans, but the validation that comes from being connected to thousands of followers is apparently very hard to leave on the table. Take, for instance, the case of Trent Reznor, who has been trying to kick the Twitter habit for over a month. He initially left the site after members of the Metal Sludge began polluting his feed. Reznor then resurfaced on the website, only to find that his retirement had made him the object of ridicule. Though he bravely tweeted through insults to his fiancee (which should have been the breaking point), he left again when the target switched to Eric De La Cruz, whom Reznor had supported through an eventually fatal illness. After De La Cruz's sister saw the messages and became upset, Reznor finally decided to cut the cord, calling the messagers "trolling, cowardly pigs." While it's awful that Reznor is being forced to leave the website, perhaps this will serve two purposes: Twitter will see a need to overhaul their use policy and Reznor will get back to making music instead of microblogs.
