My Own Love Song is a new feature film starring Forest Whitaker and Renée Zellweger about a wheelchair-bound singer who decides to embark on a road trip to Memphis with her best friend. The movie isn’t due out until later this year, but the soundtrack has already caused a considerable stir.
The film features music from Bob Dylan, who enjoyed recording the soundtrack so much that he turned it into his 2009 album, Together Through Life. Some music from that record still remains, but so do 16 previously unreleased Dylan tracks, many of which have been performed by the stars of the film.
Whitaker, Georges Drakoulias and Don Sparks have all worked on Dylan’s songs, but the headline-grabbing tracks are all by Zellweger. She performs a version of “Life is Hard” and a cover of Woodie Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” extracts of which can be previewed in these clips. And the results? Surprisingly not bad at all.
