R.E.M.'s 1984 album Reckoning, the follow-up to their auspicious debut full-length of the previous year, represented a leap to the next level both commercially and artistically. The band expanded its sound and its songwriting scope on such tunes as "(Don't Go Back To) Rockville," "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)," -- these guys liked their parentheses -- and "Pretty Persuasion," and the tracks were all over college radio, to a greater degree than even Murmur had been. The historical importance of Reckoning will fully hit home with the deluxe, double-disc 25th-anniversary reissue that's set for June 23.
The remastered album will come packaged with a bonus disc featuring a 1984 R.E.M. concert in Chicago, where they performed most of the album, plus tunes from previous and future releases. Vinyl junkies will jump at the news that both Reckoning and Murmur will be released in mouth-watering 180-gram vinyl versions on the aforementioned date as well.
