R.E.M. is still rocking on Accelerate, and from this clip of the band performing on The Colbert Report, it looks like R.E.M. is still doing some of the quirky things on stage that it long has. For one, Stipe, Mills, and Buck continue to give short shrift to the other musicians they play with. Long time backing guitarist Scott McCaughey and ex-Ministry drummer Bill Rieflin didn't get to sit in on the funny interview with Colbert before the performance, and Colbert pretty much ignores them after the song is done. For another, Stipe still has his lyrics in front of him on a music stand, remaining concerned after all these years that he might forget the words to his own songs. I suppose quirks are what make a band great, and R.E.M. certainly sounds superb here as the band rips through "Supernatural Superserious."
