R.E.M. working on new album with new producer

Billboard reports that R.E.M. have hit the studio to work on an album they hope to have out by the end of the year. Bringing in some new blood to try to freshen things up after the disappointment that was Around the Sun, the trio are working with Irish producer Jacknife Lee. Lee previously produced Snow Patrol’s Final Straw and U2’s How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Jacknife Lee is a pretty cool name, so let’s hope he injects some cool back into the band’s sound. Bassist Mike Mills tells Billboard he and Michael Stipe and Peter Buck are hoping for a rockier sound this go-round.
In other R.E.M. news, drummer Bill Berry will reunite with the group to perform at Monday’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which you can catch live on VH1 Classic.
