Rdio Reveals Tier-Based Free Service With No Ads

It's been a relatively big few days for streaming music services. On Monday, we reported that Rhapsody will acquire Napster and all of its subscribers, among other assets. And today, Rdio has revealed that they will offer tier-based free service for its users. According to Hypebot, non-subscribers will see a bar in their profile indicating how much free music they can listen to at a time. And it's apparently all based on usage, which means you'll have more free music if you use the service more often. Interesting.

Rdio released the following statement on the system:

“The amount of free a person will get is dynamic and will be based on their own personal use and displayed in a meter in the corner of their profile. A heavy user will get more, but probably not as much as they will want and a light user will get more than they’d ever want. When a user runs out one month, they can come back the next month for more free or they don’t have to wait and can sign up for an unlimited account.”
