Rapper Speech Debelle (Corynne Elliot) has beat out such contenders as Bat for Lashes and Friendly Fires to win the 2009 Mercury Prize. She received the prestigious award, which singles out one outstanding album from the U.K. or Ireland each year, for her debut, Speech Therapy. The honor comes with £20,000 in prize money. At the ceremony, the Mercury judges called her a "remarkable new voice in British hip-hop, tough, warm and reflective.”
