Rage Against the Machine vs X Factor Organizer Speaks

The man behind the campaign to thwart the monolithic X Factor and get Rage Against the Machineto the top of the singles chart in the U.K. has spoken out about his exploits. Jon Morter started a Facebook campaign to get “Killing in the Name” to the #1 slot at Christmas, hoping to beat out the eventual winner of TheX Factor.

"It's a rallying cry," he told NME. "It’s been taken on by thousands in the group as a defiance to Simon Cowell's 'music machine'. Some certainly do see it as a direct response to him personally. If that's what they take out of that song, then that's fine for them. We've nothing personal against him at all, we just do not want yet another Christmas chart-topper from that show again."

The Facebook group currently has over 500,000 members, which would presumably be enough to topple Simon Cowell and his “music machine” if they all go out and buy the Rage Against the Machine song. Although, as NME points out, the band’s label, Sony, is also the behind TheX Factor. So a major label wins out regardless, but only if scores of people disregard the fuck-you-I-won’t-do-what-you-tell-me mantra of the Rage Against the Machine song.

"Yes, we are aware of that,” said Morter, who is no doubt tired of this line of inquiry already. “For me it was the song that's important... I'm not fussed what label it happens to be on. This is supposed to be fun!" The Facebook group for the Rage Against the Machine campaign can be found here, although a number of alternate protests may thwart Morter’s efforts. Here’s one from the always excellent Popjustice.

This was also the problem with Rage. Raging against the Machine (happy to be part of the machine).

What does this plank think will happen even if RATM gets to number 1? Do you think cowell and co will stop making manufactured pop and cancel the x factor? Nothing. Will. Change. Christmas always has been silly season in the singles chart and this is just another example.
And if its just a bit of fun why is this dick ranting and raving like this is the most important thing in the world? I think he was just too stupid to realise it was on the same label until it was too late and if frantically backtracking rather than admit his idea has failed in a fundamental way.

So congrats on helping sony make twice as much money to spend on future x-factor shows in years to come. Give yourself a clap you complete arse. You had the chance to give some money and exposure to a new, unsigned or independant artist and you blew it by choosing a bunch of crusty old has-beens. Way to change the music industry fool.

'we just do not want yet another Christmas chart-topper from that show again' - and who the hell are you to decide what people want? Ever occur to you that the x-factor single sells so well because at least some people like it? Get a low opinion of a lot of people havent you? You must have the ego the size of a planet.

in response to that big long comment below, you so need to get a grip. It's a bit of harmless fun, and if people wanted to listen to x factor crap then why is rage winning?? it was just a guy starting a small thing that people should try get rage to the top, nothing about money or future x factor shows being better. if you ask me, your ego is way too big! yes, i see the point of letting someone new come to the top of the charts, as a confidence boost etc, but as if the person who started "rage for number 1" stuff actually thought it WOULD happen. jeeeze man get a grip of yourself!
