Radiohead Producer And “Sixth Member” Nigel Godrich Forms New Band, Releases A Track

Radiohead producer and unofficial sixth member, Nigel Godrich has collaborated with L.A. drummer / producer Joey Waronker and London siren Laura Bettison to form the band Ultraista. New track “Smalltalk” tremors with Godrich’s familiar dense layers of sound, fizzing synths and a delicately shimmering vocal from Bettison. Fans of the producer’s previous work should take a liking.

Though Godrich is best known as a producer, working with the likes of Beck, and Paul McCartney as well as producing everything Radiohead have done since the My Iron Lung EP, he has been emerging from behind the mixing desk with increased regularity of late. Godrich was recently spotted djing new Atoms for Peace songs with fellow supergroup member Thom Yorke. Murmurings around the blogosphere suggest that the band may have a debut album out before the year’s end. The producer was also the brains behind the podcast turned television show “From The Basement,” documenting fine live performances by everyone from Jarvis Cocker to Iggy and the Stooges a la The Old Grey Whistle Test.  Check out the Ultraista tune and video below.
