Putin Planned Propaganda Against Pussy Riot?

Despite their support from Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, Russian feminist punk rock outfit Pussy Riot don't seem to have President Vladimir Putin on their side.

Three Pussy Riot members have been jailed since being sentenced to two years in prison this past August for their "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" after performing a "punk prayer" in a Moscow cathedral. The group is set to appeal the charges this coming Wednesday.

Yesterday, Vladimir Putin was reported saying that the three women "got what they asked for" and that "It was right that they were arrested, and the court's decision was right." One of the women's lawyers, Nikolai Polozov, said that the President's remarks were "a planned propaganda campaign aimed at getting the court to form a negative opinion," and were also "pressure on the court." Putin was previously reported saying that the Pussy Riot members shouldn't be judged "too harshly" before their Aug. 17 sentencing which may or may not have had an effect on the results of their two year sentence as opposed to the possible seven year sentence.

In even more possible disgust for the band from Putin, he had asked a reporter, Vadim Takmenyov, if he could translate the band's name for him. When the reporter said that he wasn't able to say it in front of the President, Putin replied, "You see, if you can't say it in front of me, it means it's an indecent word. These girls must be talented – they forced you all to say that word."

Knowing that Pussy Riot's defiant performance back in February coincided with a Russian opposition movement, Putin said, "There are many here who don't want Russia to get stronger."
