Panda Bear knows how to invoke nostalgia. On Person Pitch he brought back the thrill of sunny melodies, proving that music can be referential and futuristic at the same time. Then he made "My Girls," which, as you know, sounds like the Beach Boys and rap and Chicago house -- and Animal Collective, too. Now he’s revived another of pop culture’s long-lost pleasures: the celebrity endorsement that actually means something.
On the Korg website, he offers his thoughts on the brand’s various synths, along with some interesting anecdotes about his creative process. He definitely knows his way around the Korg product line, and seems genuinely excited to incorporate new items into his setup. I am glad that he got money and gear to do this. He deserves it.
Here is my favorite thing that he says about making music:
"I think I’m a little afraid, or at least wary, of having go to techniques, and I feel like I’d rather steer clear of repeating things if I can. I’d like to stay in a zone that’s sort of uncomfortable creatively speaking, if you know what I mean. I’d say that being in the possession of some kind of mastery and being a beginner are two very similar states of mind. So I’d like to stay as close to those extremes as possible." [Stereogum]
