When you’ve been at Coachella for hours at the end of Friday, or for two full days come Saturday, nothing sounds more appealing than a quick getaway-from-your-getaway. Coachella is famous for its offsite parties, events and concerts, which can range from outlandish mansion parties to more relaxed poolside affairs at nearby hotels.
A quick jaunt up the highway, made all the more enjoyable by my affable, septuagenarian cab driver and his interest in the local Bentley dealership, brought me to the Puma Social at the Caliente Tropics Hotel in Palm Springs. No mistake, we were still out in the desert – the tall palm trees and cloudless sky made that clear – but this was the desert in style. There was the crystal-clear pool, the DJ booth, the shaded lawn, the complimentary vodka drinks inside the hotel bar, which opened up into the pool patio.
Outside, you could get a custom tee shirt from the all-black-everything Puma Social Truck. Gibson was showcasing a number of guitars up on the lawn, and later in the afternoon, their reps started jamming. It was the kind of party you want when you’re seeking refuge from the crowds and bustle of the festival grounds – an oasis of cool under the afternoon sun.
