You’d think that the tortuous tale of Public Enemy’s attempt to fund a new album via the website Sellaband would make Chuck D and Flavor Flav run as far away from the Internet as possible, right? Wrong. The group has returned to the site for another stab at the whole fan-funding thing, this time with significantly lowered expectations.
The band raised around $71,000 last time, which was well short of their proposed $250,000 total. Someone’s got to fund Flav’s clock habit, so they’ve started again from scratch, with the proposed total now $75,000. So, if all the original folks simply return and bid the same amount again, the deal will almost be done.
The Sellaband hjiinks have already begun, and with the total raised so far currently standing at $55,000, there shouldn’t be too many problems this time out. "We have learned that the fan-funding model is still not fully developed and, as a result, a $250,000 fund-raising effort, while possible, will take too long to accomplish,” said the group.
