Princess Nokia has been working the underground hip-hop scene in New York for awhile now. Many are familiar with her name, but she’s still a relatively new figure in the world of mainstream rap, for now. Exuding swag, confidence, and style, her new song “G.O.A.T.” serves as her first release with Rough Trade Records.
Directed by Destiny Frasqueri & Milah Libin, the video sees Princess Nokia coasting around New York in a shiny red three-wheeler. She works the car like a supermodel, posing sensually and confidently. Rocking a vintage gold chain, small white top, shredded mom jeans, and a trendy red-and-yellow jacket, her look is chic and hip. The video stays focused on the rapper with up-close shots of her spitting bars. It’s minimal and simple, perfectly personifying the braggadocios nature of “G.O.A.T.”
Produced by Wally West, the song features dark, distorted samples of string instruments processed through reverb and delay effects. A bass-heavy trap beat takes hold of the instrumental with rattling snares and sporadic hi-hats. Right away, she proclaims her boss status: “Hate to burst your bubble, bitch / I’m that weird girl that’s runnin’ shit.” Calling herself weird presents a theme early on that Princess Nokia isn’t afraid to embrace what some might see as “weird.” For example, later in the song, she raps, “I got no ass and I got no titties / But all of your dudes, they hit me to hit me.” Her confidence and swagger make her incredibly infectious and tantalizing. “It’s me who took the weirdo shit / To another level, and I’m killin’ it,” she raps, and it’s hard to disagree with her.
“G.O.A.T.” comes after Princess Nokia’s 2016 mixtape, 1992. She is going on tour in support of the tape, where she’ll make stops at FYF Fest, Afropunk, Roskilde, and more. Check out a full list of dates below via Twitter.
