For the fourth week, here is our weekly playlist using RDIO. We had a busy week around these parts, so let's get down to the music. You can listen to our playlist over here, or stream it below.
This week's playlist starts with Frank Ocean, an artist who dominated our R&B singers power rankings, and was considered in a piece on nostalgic pop music. From there we go to How to Dress Well and Destroyer, two other artists mentioned in those pieces. Read them, all right?
This week we also considered PJ Harvey's great Rid of Me, which songs should be on a Drive-By Truckers compilation, checked out the Neutral Milk Hotel videogame, spun Blu's new album, and learned that Lil Wayne is releasing his new album, Tha Carter IV, right after the VMAs. So the next five tracks are cuts from those artists.
It was a busy reviews week too, as we reviewed new records from Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Fool's Gold, Fruit Bats and Pepper Rabbit. A cut from each is here on the playlist.
We end this week's playlist on a somber note with "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Jailhouse Rock," two songs written by songwriting teams that lost members this week. Jerry Leiber of Leiber & Stoller died at 78 this week. Leiber helped write some of the original rock 'n' roll songs (like "Jailhouse Rock"). Meanwhile Nick Ashford of Ashford & Simpson died this week at 69. Ashford was responsible for writing many of Motown's seminal singles. We lost two pioneers this week. R.I.P. to both of them.
