Usually when you run into an ex lovers, that's more than enough drama to cause a hurricane of emotions to rain all day and night long. But imagine running into an ex at a wedding? All of those emotions would be magnified like the hurricane that's been spinning on Jupiter's surface for over four hundred years. And in this instance, it caused singer songwriter Dessa to write her song "Call Off Your Ghost." In its original form, the rumbling array of beats gave the haunting lyricism of the song a visual darkness that Dessa addressed in her profound story for an ex-lover.
Dessa explained in detail as what draws her closer to the track:
"Of the 12 songs on Parts of Speech, I think "Call Off Your Ghost" is one of the tracks I'm proudest of. The lyrics are honest; the Paper Tiger beat is driving and pretty; and there's a whole world of moving harmonies in the chorus. When someone asks what I do for a living, that song is one I'd play first."
But now fellow Doomtree cohorts Committee (made up of producer Lazerbeak and Gayngs/Poliça mastermind Ryan Olson) have taken the track and injected some of their flavor to it. More warped and hyped up synths surround Dessa's voice. The track gets a little bounce but still retains all of the haunting emotions Dessa fuels.
Lazerbeak's take on the remix:
"Ryan and I (aka Bryan and Daaron) have been collaborating on music for the past year or so, and this Dessa remix is the first official track we've released under the name Committee (our new production duo/alliance/sports team). The goal with "Call Off Your Ghost" was to rebuild the song from the vocals up, allowing them plenty of room to breathe under a darker and more minimal R&B backdrop. Super pumped about it. Shouts to Towel Man and Formula Boi."
