No one likes barometers that remind them of how old they’re getting. Grey hairs. New wrinkles. Bands considered of “your generation” that are now eligible for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This year’s act that reminds all youth is long gone is R.E.M. Yes, it’s officially been 25 years since the boys from Athens released their first recorded product, so they’re now eligible for enshrinment alongside Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley. Now excuse me while I go put my teeth back in.
The other eight nominees are The Stooges, Patti Smith, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, The Ronettes, Van Halen, the Dave Clark Five, Chic, and Joe Tex. If my opinion counted in this, I’d vote yay on the first half of that list, nay on the second half.
It was once a life goal of mine to be the person who inducted R.E.M. into the Hall. Just haven’t gotten around to that whole “becoming famous” thing yet. Now I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Pavement.
