Fest mania: big shit poppin’ in Montreal

I was just talking with a newcomer to Los Angeles yesterday about how much great music there is in this city and all the great venues to see it in. Still, though, I don’t know if L.A. is thought of as a “cool” music city, like Montreal is. Does hipness just run in the water up there? Seems like every attractive young person in Montreal picks up an instrument and joins a band.
Groups local and from out of town will descend upon Montreal October 3 through 7 for the sixth annual Pop Montreal festival. Are you ready for me to start naming them? Are you sitting down? Here we go: Patti Smith, Pere Ubu, the National, Oakley Hall, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Final Fantasy, Half Japanese, Cody ChesnuTT, Sunset Rubdown, Caribou, MSTRKRFT, Cool Kids, Black Mountain, Magnolia Electric Co., Chad VanGaalen, the Watson Twins, Fujiya and Miyagi, Earlimart, Bobby Conn, Qui, and Jay Reatard. Phew! That’s just some of the over 300 acts set to play the fest. To find out who else will be there, and how you can be there too, head to the fest’s website.
