Phoenix Discuss Soundtrack to Sophia Coppola's 'Somewhere'

Phoenix just played Coachella this past weekend, and reportedly drew a much larger crowd than Pavement, who were playing at the same time. We already know that the band is producing a soundtrack for the new Sophia Coppola movie, Somewhere, and now more details have emerged about the recording.

“It's almost like sound design,” said Coppola’s partner and Phoenix frontman, Thomas Mars. “It wasn't like writing songs, it was more about trying to make a sound that fits with a Ferrari and the city of Los Angeles's theme. It was more of an engineer work than a composer.”

“She asked us to do some music, very in the spirit of [Wolfgang Amadeus track] 'Love Like a Sunset,' so we tried to put that track and elements of the track in the movie, and it worked well," said guitarist Christian Mazzalai. Somewhere is expected to be released in theaters this fall.

It seems to make sense that Phoenix would draw a bigger crowd than Pavement, no?

I suppose so. I'm not really sure what the Coachella demographic was like this year (lots of bros, from the sound of the reports). I just thought as this was Pavement's first North American date, it would have been packed. But, by all accounts, it doesn't sound like that happened.
