Pharrell Says Cee Lo Green’s Label Turned Down “Happy”

Looks like Cee Lo Green had a certified hit record on his hands, but his record label ultimately decided Pharrell keep the track. During an interview with Howard Stern, the iconic hat-wearing producer explained Cee Lo had actually recorded his own version of “Happy”. To anyone who’s heard the worldwide hit, it seems like a no-brainer, really: the famous tune sounds like it was made as the next pop charttopper for the “F*ck You” singer.

“He sounded amazing on it. I mean, he burns my version,” Pharrell admited. “But the – how do I say this diplomatically? The powers that be, at the time, did not see it fit for him. Some folks on his team just felt that the priority should be on [Cee Lo’s] album at the time, so they elected not to do that song.

Ironically, Pharrell is scheduled to take Cee Lo’s place on NBC’s The Voice for Season 7, as Cee Lo announced he wouldn’t be returning to star as a judge on the show. Pharrell is no stranger to The Voice, having been on the show before as a guest vocal coach. [HipHopWired]
