Petty downloads experience post Super Bowl boom

When Tom Petty was announced as the halftime entertainment for this year’s Super Bowl, many music fans were scratching their heads with one hand and crossing their fingers against a wardrobe malfunction with the other. After performing a twelve-minute set that reminded the world that they loved his brand of basic guitar-driven rock, Petty is sitting on a pile of royalties accumulated from post-Super Bowl music downloads. Petty’s Greatest Hits album experienced a two hundred percent jump in digital sales and placed atop the Top Pop Catalog Chart, while The Heartbreakers’ Anthology: Through the Years shot up almost two hundred and fifty percent and landed at the number six position. “Free Fallin’,” perhaps Petty’s most recognizable tune, experienced similar gains in sales, shooting up almost three hundred percent and coming in at number ten on the Hot Digital Songs listing. Mike Davis, executive VP of Universal Music Enterprises, says that Petty’s run of success actually began when he was announced as a performer at the Super Bowl, and that the singer’s entire catalog experienced a boost due to the publicity.
