Via Billboard:That headline doesn't mean that Peter Hook is doing kooky things with heroin and therefore is in danger of lighting his hair on fire, a la Richard Pryor. No, the New Order bassist is assembling a supergroup of sorts under the moniker Freebase. First of all, the band is going to be very low-end heavy, as Hook has recruited fellow bassists Mani (of Primal Scream/Stone Roses) and Andy Rourke, formerly of the Smiths. (They pretty much have to cover Spinal Tap's "Big Bottom," right?) As for vocalists, it's a veritable parade of Brit Rock stars. Ian Brown, Bobby Gillespie (of Primal Scream), and Tim Burgess (of the Charlatans) have all already laid down tracks with Freebase, and Liam Gallagher is expected to do the same. There's no set label or release date for the project yet. Similarly, Hook also adds that there's no concrete plans for another New Order album at this time.
