It was unlikely that the members of R.E.M. would stay quiet for long following the band’s recent split. Peter Buck looks likely to beat Michael Stipe and Mike Mills to completing the first solo project from the former band members, with rumors circulating that he is already working on a record.
The story principally comes from Scott McCaughey, a frequent collaborator with R.E.M. who has also worked with Buck on the Minus 5 project. McCaughey was speaking to Seattle’s KIRO 97.3, where he let slip that the guitarist was “making this record of his,” which he said was “pretty ‘out.’”
A few other details emerged in the interview—McCaughey says it’s likely we will hear Buck’s vocals on the record, although it’s less likely he will perform live. The subsequent album may be vinyl only, with no download version available, but we all know that someone will just rip the vinyl and put it online if that is the case.
