Stupid quote of the day: Illusions of grandeur edition (Pete Wentz)

Via: NME
It seems Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz is in desperate need of some perspective. As you may or may not know (or care) the band's upcoming album Infinity on High was leaked onto the net a few weeks back, long before its February 6 release date. Wentz and his bandmates are somewhat upset over these developments, and they have every right to be, but check out Wentz's bloated sense of cultural importance:
"This could be the worst leak in the history in music. This could potentially be one of the biggest leaks there is. If you think that every year computers, iPod, internet music grows exponentially and we're probably one of the biggest bands in rock music on the internet."
Wait, what? Did I miss something here? Last I checked, Fall Out Boy (while admittedly pretty popular) had yet to score a #1 single, and arguably owed most of its popularity to Wentz whipping his dick out for picture time. Not exactly "biggest bands in rock music on the internet" (whatever that means) type stuff.
Stay tuned for Brandon Flowers' inevitable catty response that, infact, The Killers are the biggest band in rock music on the internet.
Stumble It!

I agree that he is out of control saying that this is "the worst leak in history" or whatever (I actually would pick the unmastered hail to the thief is we're counting). But there is a pretty good argument for fall out boy being the biggest band in rock. Counting singles isn't fair, since rock doesn't chart that way any more, and the new record will certainly be at the top of the charts when it is released. The Killers have a pretty good claim to it as well, but then again, so do nickelback.

The band is popular, there's no denying that , but come on. The Killers and My Chemical Romance are just as popular. Hell, I'd rank Coldplay and the White Stripes ahead of them in so much as they have wider appeal geographically and demographically if they do put out new albums, they'll regain their lost ground and overtake any of the bands I just listed. Then there's Radiohead. I could go on, but I won't. I just find it extremely ignorant that a band who's primary fanbase is U.S. teenagers would call itself the biggest band on the internet given the global reach of the internet.

you would think this was part of their skeezy marketing strategy. my question: when is the fallen PW sex tape coming out?

coldplay is a pretty good point. I definitely agree that there are competitors, it's not like we're talking about nirvana in 1992, but I just think they have a decent claim on the title.

He did say "one of the biggest" and not "the biggest."

Ok, but the whole "worst leak in history" thing makes it pretty obvious where he sees his band on the shortlist.

i think that part qualifies him for stupid quote level. I'm just saying don't go by #1 singles, cause rock has no commercial power anymore on the radio.

I don't think that's fair to say. There's four rock acts in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 right now.

i have never heard a fall out boy song. true story.

to be honest, they are definitley one of the biggest rock bands in the world. also, they are not that great, but seriously i don't see much of a difference between them and the killers except they both decided to hop on different trends.

since the end of 2000, there have been only two rock singles that hit #1 on the hot 100. And fall out boy is currently at number 2.

maybe he meant it was the worst leak in history. get it? get it? huh. who gets it? what i mean is, the quality of the music that was leaked is the worst when compared to all other leaks in the history of rock music. now do you get it, you morons. jesus christ, why do i always have to dumb it down around here.

i just talked to my 14 year old sister and I think fallout boy is not as cool as they were a year and a half ago with teenage girls.

Nathan... You're really wrong. Fall Out Boy is still "cool". They're amazing.

July 11, 2007 at 10:09 p.m.

alright. listen freaking here, everyone.they are a freaking huge band. they made it. who cares if Pete Wentz did that?that's his choice. i dont think it's up to you if he can do that or not.Fall Out Boy is amazing.you have something bad to say about them?dont post in on the internet. mk? thanks.

Do not talk about pete wentz or any member of Fall Out Boy. Pete is a Lyrical master and the band is pretty popular now but they have always been amazing even before they were mainstream. and i dont think Pete would care what you had to say anyway. i love fall out boy
