A prison term has often served as grist for musicians. Merle Haggard and ODB honed their craft while staying as guests of the court system, and Steve Earle emerged from a stint in jail to release a string of unforgettable albums. Apparently, a recent incarceration has had the same effect on ex-Libertine and Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty.
After spending a month in Wormwood Scrubs Prison on a probation violation, the singer emerged with a new idea for his upcoming solo album. Doherty had been working with former Libertines manager Jake Fior on and off over the last the year. Though some songs, including “Darksome Sea,” “Salome,” and “Withdrawn and Shaken,” had already been recorded, Doherty says that the month gave him a new perspective, and that he would be heading back into the recording studio with Fior as soon as he was permitted to travel abroad.
EMI has asked, no matter what other epiphanies occur, that Doherty’s album be delivered in September. [NME]
