Perez Hilton has never really hidden the fact that his blog isn't really a way to take celebs down a notch, but instead, a high-tech form of star-fuckery used to gain entre into the very circles he pretends to deride and to make a C lister of himself. The sad thing is that it's kind of worked. In addition to becoming a tabloid staple, Hilton's lack of shame has also now earned him his very own record label. Yes, Warner Music, in a decision that fits in perfectly with the music industry's ongoing commitment to bad ideas, has decided to give Perez a vanity label because, to paraphrase Hilton himself, he knows what will sell when he hears it and is multitalented in all things business:
"I have an ear, which is really important in the music world -- to be able to hear a hit and to be able to know who has a good song or not," he said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "I'm more than just an A&R person. I'm also a marketing person. I'm also a manager."
Hilton's hyping of certain musicians, and the success of those acts -- Florence and the Machine, Little Boots and Lady Gaga come to mind -- likely also had something to do with it, too. Of Gaga he said, "I saw the potential in her from the very beginning before anyone else."
Obviously, Hilton's previously demonstrated willingness to endlessly promote bands he supports (and anything involving himself) means an awful lot of free press for this new label and its acts, and we're guessing Warner is banking on the site's millions of daily readers to help them sell, sell, sell. We're giving this whole endeavor a year or two (and "Perez" himself another year or two after that), but it'll be interesting to watch it unravel. On the Web, of course, as everything these days does. [Hypebot]
