Pelican Flock to Southern Lord, Fly Westwards for the Spring

It is with many a raised eyebrow that Prefix reports that Chicago instru-metal icons Pelican have left their longtime home at Hydra Head for another L.A.-based independent metal label, Southern Lord. Though details are few, the Hydra Head blog suggests that the split was amicable and hard feelings are non-existent. The connections between Pelican and Southern Lord aren’t new — drummer Larry Herweg once played in Lair of the Minotaur, a current Southern Lord act.

Pelican are currently recording an EP at Red Room Studios in Seattle. It will be their first release for Southern Lord, and boasts a cameo from an unannounced guest guitarist who was reportedly influential to the band. I’m hoping Robert Fripp or Page Hamilton but I’m guessing it’ll be Nuno Bettencourt.
