Patti Smith paid Kristen Stewart a high compliment during an interview with EW. The singer discussed plans to adapt her memoir, Just Kids, for film and who she sees cast as her younger self. Smith's top choice? Twilight star Stewart, whom she describes as "not conventionally beautiful, but very charismatic."
Furthermore, Smith compared Stewart's rocky onscreen/offscreen romance with Robert Pattinson to her own relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe: "I remember the very first time I saw Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson together, when they were younger, and I thought, those two kids could have easily played us when they were first starting."
Other actresses Smith has her eye on include Mia Wasikowska and Saoirse Ronan, though she favors casting relatively unseasoned talents, because, as she puts it, "Robert and I were very young. We were 20. We were unknowns, and I think it should be unknowns in the film, and young." Stewart may be the least "unknown" young actress working in Hollywood at the moment, but she does have experience playing iconic performers (see 2010's The Runaways for reference).
Smith is currently working with Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Logan.
