Proto-punk singer-songwriter legend Patti Smith may have a new album out by next year. Remember that her album released earlier this year, 12, was an all-covers affair. So Smith says she's more than ready to record some of her own material. She slyly says she hadn't realized the trend, but if indeed a new album comes from her next year, it will be the fourth time in a row she's released a new record in a presidential election year, after 2004's Trampin', 2000's Gung Ho, and 1996's Gone Again.
