Chad Bowar may look hilariously straight-laced, but as the lone metal reviewer for About.com, he knows his shit. Bowar offers up a decent list of the top 10 Swedish metal bands, and while his omission of Bathory and Entombed in favor of Amon Amarth (direct descendents of Bathory) and Evergrey may raise a frosty viking eyebrow or two, neophytes would do well to listen to the man. I'd like to see a list of his top Norwegian metal bands, because that's where things would get really contentious. Will Mayhem, Emperor or Dimmu Borgir reign supreme?

What, not a single comment? I have to resort to commenting on my own post?This is a decent list, nice to see Meshuggah up there. But I think it's a lil' skewed towards bands that are currently active. At the Gates should be way above Soilwork and probably above or at least neck-and-neck with In Flames since ATG laid down the melodic death metal blueprint for the other two to build off of.
