Opeth: best Swedish metal band?
Chad Bowar may look hilariously straight-laced, but as the lone metal reviewer for About.com, he knows his shit. Bowar offers up a decent list of the top 10 Swedish metal bands, and while his omission of Bathory and Entombed in favor of Amon Amarth (direct descendents of Bathory) and Evergrey may raise a frosty viking eyebrow or two, neophytes would do well to listen to the man. I'd like to see a list of his top Norwegian metal bands, because that's where things would get really contentious. Will Mayhem, Emperor or Dimmu Borgir reign supreme?

What, not a single comment? I have to resort to commenting on my own post?This is a decent list, nice to see Meshuggah up there. But I think it's a lil' skewed towards bands that are currently active. At the Gates should be way above Soilwork and probably above or at least neck-and-neck with In Flames since ATG laid down the melodic death metal blueprint for the other two to build off of.

Surprised to see Evergrey up that high, good band def but have only one record with them so don´t know that much about them. Another band i allso have only one record with is Therion which i have a hard time grasping why they are above bands like Katatonia and the more classic oldschool metalbands you find even higher up. Therion is in my mind not even as worthy as Pain Of Salvation which aren´t really even metal afterall, but again a very good prog band. Good list either way, OPETH!
