Okkervil River Daytrotter Session
The latest stellar session up over at Daytrotter comes from current Great American Band Okkervil River. (I recently heard a drunk at a bar make the ridiculous claim that there hasn't been any good American rock for years, and immediately brought up Okkervil River as a rebuttal.) The band only puts in one of its own songs, "You Can't Hold the Hand of a Rock and Roll Man," from this year's sure to be well-represented in year-end best lists The Stage Names. Okkervil River's other three tunes are interesting covers. The band handles John Phillips' "April Anne," Carol King's "No Easy Way Down" (probably most famously done by Dusty Springfield), and Jimmy Webb's "Do What You Gotta Do" (surely most famously done by Nina Simone). Also, the link features a nice interview with the always verbose and insightful Okkervil River lead man, Will Sheff.

Really? I don't hear that in his voice. Conor Oberst's voice definitely falls into that category for me. |

They just had him on World Cafe Live this afternoon. He's such a well spoken man. |

While I can appreciate Okkervil River's tunefulness, I legitemately cannot stand Sheff's voice. Something about it just strikes me as forced and overdone... almost emo-sounding.
