Of Montreal is not selling out

Despite how it may seem, the members of Of Montreal are not sellouts. Sure, they did that ad for Outback Steakhouse, and their new advertisement for T-Mobile debuted last night during the American Music Awards, but don'''t call them sellouts. No, really. Don'''t. Because according to an essay sent to Stereogum by Of Montreal'''s Kevin Barnes, selling out isn'''t possible. He felt so strongly about that sentiment that he even titled his thirteen-hundred-plus-word piece such. Although the full text of Barnes'''s statement is available here, the Cliffs Notes version is this: Barnes says anytime bands or artists do anything that pays the bills they are accused of selling out, and he'''s not going to take it anymore. Artists must choose between anarchism and capitalism, and he is standing staunchly in the capitalist camp -- partially because the pay is better, but also because all the hate directed at him by the ''"indie fascists''" just inspired him to make better music. Ergo, selling out isn'''t possible. Long-winded sanctimony, though? Very possible. [Stereogum]
