Noel Gallagher’s departure from Oasis on Friday night (Aug. 28) may not have been the most surprising news of the year, but it’s still unclear exactly what happened to provoke his exit. Now rumors are gathering about the altercation between the Gallagher brothers at the French music festival Rock en Seine.
British tabloid the Sun claims that Liam smashed one of Noel’s precious guitars, reporting that the incident “got totally out of hand very quickly.” Rumors that the brothers hadn’t spoken for years and only maintained a professional relationship have often surfaced, and clearly the simmering tension boiled to the surface in Paris on Friday.
Bloc Party singer Kele Okereke seized on the moment and taunted the Gallagher brothers during his band’s performance at the festival, calling Noel and Liam “inbred twins.” Okereke has previously voiced his distaste for Oasis and their music, and his full monologue on their split can be seen in the video clip below.
Noel’s full statement on his departure can be read here.
