The music world lost one of its most influential drummers when Neu!’s Klaus Dinger died in March last year. Dinger practically invented the motorik beat that many bands have tried to replicate in subsequent years, and has been sited as a huge influence on David Bowie, Stereolab, Deerhunter and a host of other acts.
Now a Neu! tribute album, titled Brand Neu!, is due, and the lineup of bands contributing songs contains a few unlikely additions. Oasis and Neu! are both known for their love of extreme repetition, but it’s still a surprise to see the inclusion of “I Can See it Now” from the Japanese version of the Gallagher brothers’ Don’t Believe the Truth.
Noel Gallagher has cited krautrock as an influence in the past, calling last year’s single “The Shock of the Lightning” “…kind of more krautrock, you know? Bands like Can and Neu!. I guess it's the most energetic thing we've done – for a single – for quite a few years." Neu! member Michael Rother also contributes a track, and Bobby Gillespie from Primal Scream says: “I hope that this album turns more people onto the music of NEU!” [The Quietus]
