Oasis' Noel Gallagher lists Top 10 bands, puts foot in mouth

Asinine behavior on the part of Oasis' famed Gallagher brothers should surprise no one at this late date, but Noel Gallagher seems to have topped himself (and he's supposed to be the smart one). In a personal missive posted on the band's official website, Gallagher decided to name his Top 10 bands of all time; okay, dullsville, but fair enough -- list the Beatles 10 times and walk away, done deal, right? Unsurprisingly, Noel's list does indeed begin with the Fab Four, and is dominated by other Britpop/British Invasion staples (Who, Kinks, you know the drill). Whatever.

The disturbing part is Gallagher's stated criteria, which displays overt sexism and (at best) covert racism: "No female artists allowed. No collectives allowed (Public Enemy etc.)." The man who brayed his indignation about Jay-Z playing Glastonbury surely shocks no one by claiming that Public Enemy is not a band, and is thus ineligible for serious consideration. We don't imagine he's ever been part of anybody's Rainbow Coalition. But the unbridled misogyny -- is that a new wrinkle, or has he flown his He-Man Women Haters Club flag in the past? In either case, nicely done Noel, you've accomplished the impossible by making your brother look like Mahatma Ghandi in comparison.

Noel Gallagher's greatest male, Caucasian-fronted bands of all time:

1. The Beatles

2. The Rolling Stones

3. The Who

4. Sex Pistols

5. The Kinks

6. The La's

7. Pink Floyd

8. The Bee Gees

9. The Specials

10. (Peter Green's) Fleetwood Mac

Covert racism? The Specials definitely had 2 African descendant players in their group.

I know, I meant to add a note to that effect, but that still doesn't exactly make Noel Martin Luther King...

Diversity FTW.

Never mind his being a jack-ass. How about the fact he has the Sex Pistols on his list? That should immediately disqualify anyone from making a list.

Yet another journalist trying to make something out of absolutely nothing.

I'm at a loss to see what Mahatma Ghandi and Martin Luther King have to do with personal music taste.

Do you accuse everyone you don't like of being a (covert) racist?

Hey - Noel Gallagher has a right to express an opinion. But the right to be heard doesn't automatically include the right to be taken seriously.

Where have you heard that one, Pete? Rocks.

Dear Jim,

I really believe people like you are the problem with this world. Why you would take a completely innocent blog and turn it into something ridiculous just shows that you have nothing better to do than over analyze things that are not in any way shape or form wrong. I mean this in the nicest way possible but fu#k off.

You're right David. I'm the problem. I see the light now. It's all in my head. There's nothing even vaguely sexist about saying "No female artists allowed." And nothing subliminally racist about labeling great hip-hop groups as "collectives" so you can discount them completely, rather than simply restricting your summation to rock bands. And of course, there's nothing one could even remotely call into question about hurling expletives at those with whom you disagree. Everything seems so much clearer to me now, thank you for opening my eyes. It's a bright, new day.

"I f*cking despise hip hop. Loathe it. Eminem is a f*cking idiot and I find 50 Cent the most distasteful character I have ever crossed in my life. It's so negative. Eminem's new song about his kid - isn't it the most ridiculous piece of music you have ever heard in your life? I just don't like the dragging women around on dog leads and all that stuff. I'm not f*cking having that"-Noel Gallagher
defeats everything you said

worst article ive ever read. how is he racist if most of his favourite bands are white lineups? thats just stupid. if you asked 50 cent, Ice Cube or members of Public Enemy(who are part of the overtly racist NOI) who there favourite bands are they would all be black. you could argue sexism, although i just think he likes real music and women most of the time make pop crap. your just a f*cken idiot whos trying to be liberal. what your saying is he should include blacks just coz theyre black, your the racist, and that is patronising to black people aswell. he said he doesnt like hip-hop not black people, theres a difference. i dont like hip hop but on my weekends i dont go around lynching black people in ku klux klan attire. your just intertwinning the two so we cant differentiate black people from hip hop. he likes the specials, who are ska, which is a jamaican derived genre, with 2 tone being roughly half black half white. your a f*cken idiot, whos attempt at liberalism as failed. if noel gallagher said "i dont count bands with blacks as bands" then you could argue racism, but disliking hip hop isnt subliminally racist.

Let's call this what it was: TRYING TO MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING. It's his f--king top 10, which means it's his opinion of who he thinks are the best.

I'm an asian woman. My top 10 bands would mostly be in the 60s era, most members of those bands would be of Caucasian descent, and there would be no women singers in those bands either. Am I a women-hating racist too?

STFU and do some real journalistic reporting.

Who is the idiot writing this article? Noel Gallagher is a covert racist and sexist? This 'Jim Allen' guy is just one of the PC idiots of this world that we could do without. Seriously, get a life if you seriously think that.

July 21, 2009 at 9:14 a.m.

jim you ignorant fool you probably dont know the first thing about any of these bands, proved by the fact that the specials had two black members and the root of the genre of music comes from africa,do some research the next time you write an artical,oh and britpop was not on the music scene till the 90's and no band listed above was in the 90's bar the la's but they wouldn be labeled britpop!JIM ALLEN YOU MY FRIEND ARE A CLOWN
