Normal People: Vivian Girls, like, totally hate you

Hey you, guy who eats at TGI Fridays. Do you want to hear how the Vivian Girls feel about your choice of bar, job, and friends? Who are Vivian Girls you ask? Well, they hate you for not choosing to be in a punk band, and opting to drink at a place with bitching taquitos with your co-workers. Watch the clip above for them to set you straight.

Also, if you play guitar, but can't write songs, they hate you too. Watch below. [Uncensored Interview via Stereogum]

Damn, idiots...

December 3, 2008 at 12:36 p.m.

Wow... That was more annoying, and bratty than a Kanye West quote.

December 3, 2008 at 12:38 p.m.

oh dear lord.

December 3, 2008 at 12:48 p.m.

are they being serious?

December 3, 2008 at 12:48 p.m.

I wonder if they saw the video already... Ouch, introspection ensues...

December 3, 2008 at 1:11 p.m.

I guess it was an uncensored interview

December 3, 2008 at 1:48 p.m.

I was just starting to like some aspects of their music but what a turn off, they are dead to me now, where is that delete button.......

December 3, 2008 at 2:01 p.m.

I don't have to like people to like their music, but sometimes I start liking music because I like the people... I, like, totally find VGs as tiresome as the woman who got on my bus after the No Age show last night and yelled out "people, you need to move, like, totally, i mean, God, like, for real".

Actually I pretty much hate people in general. Maybe I'm not that different.

December 3, 2008 at 2:18 p.m.

I just wonder what the specific question was? Because in a "raw" "uncensored" "real" interview, there have to be things that piss people off (which will then cause them to go the interviewers' website, which then equals victory for their advertising). The ultimate goal isn't a conversation but little bits of stupidity without any context. I am not making an apology BUT it is partially the "performance" for the interview.

December 3, 2008 at 2:46 p.m.

Wow.....maybe I'm getting old but if the presence of "cool" is acting like that then I am so effing uncool. Maybe its because I grew up in the projects of the Bronx or was in the Army for 14 years........yeah, I'll be uncool anyday over that. One.

December 3, 2008 at 4:34 p.m.

like...who..um..like cares what the vivian girls think. i hate when like artists totally ruin their image by being complete douche bags. stick to the your music and try to avoid interviews.

December 3, 2008 at 5:27 p.m.

Also, though we miss it because of our false indignation over the slighted honor of some belittled "normals" (whatever that is), there is, actually, a point here. Our manufactured culture (TGIF, yes, but bar culture in general, whether suburban or urban) creates a false image of community and togetherness. People think they are having "fun," but in reality they're just spending their money and being good consumers. I think this what they are getting at, especially when Kickball Katy says "That's the real fish out of water." Anyhow, the presentation isn't the best, but they are not as mean as they come off, I'd say.

December 3, 2008 at 7:26 p.m.

i know people like, it's not like they're mean, we can all be douchebags and this is they're time to.. in front of cameras..for millions to see... ouch. But i understand your point Johnmel and agree, the thing is they were referring to basically everybody not involved in creative processes - they mentioned musical creation only, but i'll give them that..

December 3, 2008 at 7:27 p.m.

*i know people like that

December 3, 2008 at 11:57 p.m.

Then I guess we are even.

December 4, 2008 at 12:24 a.m.

Sorry, call me a--hole but I really don't see what's wrong with what they are saying. "Normal People" life is quite boring and manufactured. Trust me, I'm living it. I much rather be in a punk band and have instant friends in every city I go to.

December 4, 2008 at 12:44 a.m.

The part that bothers me is that they are claiming they are somehow more authentic and living more meaningful lives because they are in a punk band. Who says someone can't be happy eating TGI Fridays, hanging out with their co-workers, and living in the 'burbs. I can understand if they are personally saying that they're glad they chose punk over 9-5s, but they're really saying that their choice is the right one for everyone. It's insulting to the "normal" people who use the money they could be spending at TGI's to buy their records.

December 4, 2008 at 5:09 a.m.

indeed

December 4, 2008 at 12:04 p.m.

hey jackasses, actually 2/3rds of them lived in New Brunswick, New Jersey until 2 months ago. Only one of them actually has lived in Brooklyn for any length of time.

They are, in fact, from the "rest of America," have every right to criticize the world around them, and your anti-Brooklyn stereotype bullsh*t is misplaced.

December 4, 2008 at 12:13 p.m.

Who said anything about Brooklyn other than you Peter? And of course anyone can criticize the rest of America, but that doesn't mean you can't come off as arrogant.

I met the tall redheaded girl in the band while waiting for a flight out to SXSW in March and she was really nice. Their attitude towards "normal people" on the video is pretty lame though.

December 4, 2008 at 12:16 p.m.

Yeah, I don't get why them being from Jersey would change this considerably. I think they're coming at it more from a "we're in a band and you're not" angle than from a "I'm from Brooklyn, you're from Buffalo" angle.

December 4, 2008 at 5:48 p.m.

ah, they're just kidding around and talking a little trash. who cares?

if anything, it's more of just a punk / boho versus the squares vibe.

they're also, basically, right about how crappy suburban lives frequently are. I think we pretty much all say that sh*t to each other in private conversations, they're just in trouble because they're public figures and said what we're all thinking, aloud.

December 4, 2008 at 6:52 p.m.

i can't believe anyone is defending them. They were being bratty bitches. Yeah lame , boring lifestyles exists all over this strip mall of a country, doesn't mean your shi**y punk band makes you any better than them.

Sorry, but these girls get the big NIXXXX

December 4, 2008 at 7:48 p.m.

Actually if you watch all the videos (there are 19 of them) you can tell that the girls are being sarcastic through the whole interview. but of course, the few clips that get plastered across the internet don't show that.

December 4, 2008 at 9:44 p.m.

yeah umm,

feel the outrage! this is an abomination! vivian girls diss boring suburban sluts! oh no! the humanity!

December 5, 2008 at 4:14 p.m.

peter is copying and pasting his pre-written response all over the place,
regardless of whether or not it is out of context.

December 5, 2008 at 10:08 p.m.

why is this offensive to anyone?

I pretty much agree with them, as I'm sure most of you do too.

December 6, 2008 at 9:40 a.m.

They were being sarcastic. So what?

December 6, 2008 at 8:22 p.m.

I know for a fact these Jersey girls are from money, and they have never had to work a day in their lives.

December 7, 2008 at 4:57 a.m.

those were the worst videos ever

December 8, 2008 at 8:38 p.m.

new unreleased Vivian Girls interview! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjeBeuUTgCU

December 9, 2008 at 9:41 p.m.

jesus what's the big deal? I may be biased but i would have to say that on the scales of "coolness" playing in a band totally beats the living hell out of going to a chain bar with your coworkers. I don't think the girls were trying to slight people who work for a living, but its important to have a life outside of your worklife, to have a community outside of mainstream community. And when that community is built around art and music, as opposed to say consumerism and clubbing, then yah, that's obviously more interesting.

Also, I totally f'ing agree about dicknoses who shred on their ax and can't put goddamn three chords together. it's totally pointless! virtuosity does not a songwriter make, and sure i'm impressed if someone can wail on guitar, but sometimes just playing power chords is really the best thing to do.

p.s. also, what's with prefix posting a quote unquote uncensored interview and then censoring my comment? not cool prefix.

December 10, 2008 at 5:13 p.m.

wow, the Vivian girls are bitches

December 11, 2008 at 4:51 p.m.

i am a totally 'normal' person with a 'normal' job and i would kill myself rather than have to socialize with co-workers at applebees and TGIF. just sayin'.

December 11, 2008 at 10:42 p.m.

Really neat contrived interview atmosphere...I really think they took their counterculture roots to new heights with this bathtube scene. I definitely will take them more seriously now, as I can see they are the real deal fo shizzle. On the scale of coolness Victor's talking about these girls are a 10...except for the fat ugly one with the glasses cuz she's just gross.

May 25, 2009 at 11:34 p.m.

I'm sorry but what clueless, adolescent morons. I thought I disliked people, but I think now my dislikes are based on reasonable concepts, such as ignorance. Vivian Girls hate you because they are sad little teenagers. How can you hate "electronic music" (feck me thats a lot of music they're ignoring) or guitarists who cant write songs? (Like Vivian Girls can write songs anyway.) Does it occur to you that some people gleam pleasure from learning to play an instrument? If I learned to play the cello but couldn't equal Bach's "Six Suites" in terms of composition I probably wouldn't trouble myself. Isn't this just another way of saying they hate virtuoso metal guitar, along with electronic music, dance beats in "indie rock" ("yeah, thats gotta stop" says Vivian Girl #1, as though anybody cares what she thinks) and "normals", whoever they are. If you hate as much as they do, you probably need to take a look at yourself and wonder what self-loathing you are turning outward in the form of impotent adolescent rage. And if you hate even one genre of music you should not be allowed to make it.

September 20, 2009 at 11:52 a.m.

If you look at their other interview segments, like the one about being made fun of mercilessly in high school, you can see that their contempt is for all the people who terrorized them who "grew up". Judging and marginalizing the people who judged and marginalized you is about as natural a human compulsion as you get. It's just that their thoughts got aired in public. I'm sure everyone's had their fantasies of comeuppance. Cut them a break.
