In a message titled "A note from Trent and a wave goodbye" on nin.com, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor announced that it is time to "make NIN disappear for a while" and said the band's upcoming tour with Jane's Addiction will likely be the band's last.
Towards the beginning of my career in Nine Inch Nails, our biggest break came in the form of an invitation to perform a series of shows with Jane's Addiction. These performances essentially created and defined the term "alternative" rock in the US, created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for Nirvana to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really fucking FUN to play and attend - truly the best times I've had. The shows were epic. So epic, they propelled NIN to the "next level" (whatever that means), but caused Jane's to implode. The band broke up at the end of that tour.
Reznor goes on to talk about how coroporate rock sucks, and that he feels like it's time to move on to something else. Given that he's been at it for 20 years (probably 10 more than most people expected) it is probably time for him to do something else. To read the whole message, go here.
There have been no dates announced for the NIN/Jane's Addiction tour yet, but Nine Inch Nails are slated to play Bonnaroo and Sasquatch (with Jane's Addiction), so the tour must fit around those dates. [Pitchfork]

The tour they did for "The Slip" was one of the best shows i've ever been too (visually). I will be sad to see nin go. Hopefully I'll get the chance to see them one more time.
Fear not, NIN will be back at some point. Trent can't stay away forever.

Actually given the poor quality of the last couple NIN albums, Reznor could use a break. I think his best stuff is produced when there are a couple years between projects, as opposed to months which has been the case for the last few.
If anyone's interested, I just wrote about this story and trent's impact on the music biz at my blog:

There's also a little Q&A I did with Mogwai on the future of music distribution in there as well.
